Training Practice

gp_and_bookThe practice has a long history as an accredited training practice for GP Registrars. These are fully qualified doctors who have had several years of hospital experience, have chosen General practice as a career, and who spend at least a year of supported training and development at The Firs. The Registrar forms a regular part of our clinical team.

The Registrars are involved in all aspects of clinical care, including running their own clinics and also conducting home visits. Throughout the attachment, they have plenty of opportunity and experience in learning and teaching.

The practice nurses and midwives operate a variety of dedicated clinics and Registrars obtain first hand experience of this multidisciplinary delivery of clinical care.

We also have Foundation Year 2 (FY2) doctors working in the practice. These are qualified doctors at an early stage of their career before they have decided which speciality of medicine they will join. As part of their training, The FY2 doctors spend 4 months in the practice to obtain experience in General practice and to gain a better understanding of primary care.

We are also part of the Royal London/Saint Bartholomew medical student training programme. Students spend selected days at The Firs learning about aspects of general practice and community care. Our registrars are invited to participate in the teaching of students.

What some of our trainees have said about us

I would like to say a very big thak you to everyone at The Firs for helping to make me a better doctor.  I came to The Firs knowing that I was only there for a year.  I was made to feel very welcome and part of a great team.  I have learnt a lot from everyone, the excellent doctors and nurses, my fellow Registrar, and the fantastic admin staff.  As well as being very educational, I can honestly say that I really enjoyed my time.  I will miss you all.  I should say a special thank you to Dr John who, as my supervisor, had to put up with a lot more than most.  Thank you.

 Dr Joseph Wall (GP Registrar)

I wanted to say thank you for a wonderful experience at the practice.  I had wanted to do some of my training in GP and couldn't have asked for a better place.  From the start I was made to feel so welcome.  Everyone from the receptionists to the clinical staff were friendly, helpful and accomodating.  Not only did I learn a lot during my time there, I enjoyed it greatly.

Dr Furat Al-Murani (FY2 doctor)

The GP registrar year (ST3) can be quite demanding and stressful, with things like e-portfolio and exams. Thus the choice of Surgery for this year is crucial. I am extremely pleased that I had the opportunity to work at The Firs.  I owe my successful completion of the GP training to The Firs. The staff is extremely helpful and sincere to the trainees, and we all worked together like a family. Everything works very smoothly. Dr Terry John is an excellent trainer. He is very supportive and dedicates a lot of time and effort to help the registrar prepare for exams, especially the CSA. I would fully recommend The Firs to other GP registrars and am very happy to be contacted by any registrar in this regard.

Dr Shehzad Iqbal (GP Registrar)

“The Firs is a vibrant practice, providing a supportive, friendly environment to train in. There is always someone to answer questions and to give a second opinion. I would always recommend this practice to other GP Registrars”

Dr Alim Uddin (GP Registrar)

I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the prctice.  Everyone from the doctors to the receptionist were very supportive and helpful!  I felt like my confidence in dealing with patients improved vastly and I learnt so  much under the guidance of the practice doctors.  Thank you very much for  the opportunity!

Yousef Basma (FY2 doctor)
